The NHS recommends that a safe rate of weight loss is around 0.5-1Kg (1-2lbs) per week. It also states that fast weight loss can lead to health complications, such as malnutrition, gallstones and tiredness.

We have to confess that there is NOTHING in our DietAssist programme which talks about specific diet plans, or encourages drastic weight loss.

The thing these amazing diets have in common is that they are all low in salt.

Our bodies rely sodium and potassium to carry electrical impulses around our bodies. Known as electrolytes, the concentration of these vital elements has to remain consistent in order for the body to function properly.

Salt is made of Sodium Chloride, so it tends to upset the electrolytic balance by adding more Sodium to the body. That’s why salty food makes us thirsty – the body needs the extra water to re-balance the concentration of sodium and return the electrolyte levels back to normal.

When we habitually eat more salt than our body needs, we tend to retain water as a way of compensating and keeping things in balance. This can make us look ‘puffy’ and bloated.

When you cut the salt in your diet, the reverse happens – the body doesn’t need to hold the excess water any more.

The puffiness goes, you find your clothes fit better, and you appear to lose weight.

In truth, you haven’t lost body fat, just excess water. But depending on your current salt intake, the results can be amazing – people eating over 6g of salt per day can lose 12-14lb (6-7Kg) of excess water in a week just by cutting their salt intake!
